A pair of plastic bags or hot new boots?

January 6, 2009 by Clare Saxon

These boots are high street slick, and high end quality. But the label won’t be one you have heard of, and you wouldn’t recognise the name on the bag. Because, these shoes are the bag. Plastic bags in fact, fused together to make stylishly sustainable shoes.

These beautiful and innovative must-haves are made by Chilean design student Camila Labra who has created a collection of shoes made of recycled plastic bags. This means they would certainly be waterproof!

The multiple layers of plastic are fused together for extra strength but there is also much flexibility due to the nature of the materials, meaning they are perfect for pounding the pavements with. They are lined with a soft fabric inside for comfort, so don’t be worrying about the old plastic bag sweats.

The collection is called Dacca after the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaki, which was once swamped with plastic bags.  What an eco design genius! And the main attraction of these shoes, is of course, the luxury shape and style, which can be yours for a nifty $45. Let’s hope she moves to the UK soon! Have a look at some more photos of Camila’s creations.
