Indulge and stay eco!

November 13, 2008 by greenmystyle

Alex: Obviously my hair is my pride and joy but I know using a hairdryer and GHDs everyday can’t be eco-friendly. Are there any energy-saving alternatives?

Ben: Good idea! Not than I am aware of, if anyone has invented one please come forward. I’m sure lots of people would be interested in fact maybe I should invent one! [Editor's note: You could always check out the Babyliss Eco Dryer]

Alex: I want to use energy saving light bulbs but the light seems really dim, and I can’t see properly to put my make-up on? Are there ones that warm up more quickly?

Ben: Yes some of the bulbs out there don’t make it very easy. In the office we use Bio Bulbs which are energy saving light bulbs but with go faster stripes.  They cost £12 so a bit more expensive than your average bulb but blimey are they worth it.  They are flicker free, come on instantly and claim to be as close to natural light as you can get. That’s perfect for putting your make-up on. So I’m told ;-) . [Editor's note: Watch out for our upcoming review.]

Alex: I haven’t got room to have loads of recycling bins in my London flat. How can I make sure I’m still doing my bit?

Ben: I live in central London and so don’t have much room for recycling bins in the house either.  The good thing nowadays is that, certainly in our area, we have lots of council recycling bins so we are not far from an outdoors one to use.  Keeping a crate in the kitchen that we empty a couple of times a week really isn’t a chore at all.  Most supermarkets have facilities as well as more and more street corners.  My advice if you haven’t got room for lots of bins to store your recycling in is to take it down to one of these bins on your way out or when you do your shopping, instead of waiting for the recycling bin man.

I would like to put in a good word for the Eco Washing Balls! I’ve used them for over a year now and couldn’t imagine going back to regular washing powder. They are gentle on your clothes and particularly good for sensitive skin. I always put a few drops of lavender essential oil into the rise compartment (where you usually put fabric conditioner); it smells lovely and it’s antibacterial too. So far I haven’t needed to refill them so the £35 I spent on them has stretched a long way.
