Brilliant ethical jewellery holds ‘I’m so over my ex’ evening
February 13, 2010 by Jennifer Butler
Ethically produced jewellery maker Brilliant Inc held a charity event for the Haiti Disaster Fund where woman were able to donate their unwanted jewellery. Jenny Butler writes.
‘I’m so over my ex’ was a chance for woman to throw out their bad relationship jewellery and get over their exes once and for all. There was also 20% off on many items so you could treat yourself to something new.
All donations are being sent to the Red Cross this morning for a special display and auction to raise money for those in the Haiti Earthquake disaster. So it is not only ethical recycling, it is also for a good cause.
Dervla Cogan, co-owner of Brilliant Inc, attended the event and told us about why she has run the event: “The Haiti earthquake is very topical at the moment and we wanted to do something to help. No one has seen such heartache before and it is nice to do your own bit. Everyone has bits of jewellery they don’t wear left in a box somewhere and this is a guilt-free way of recycling it for charity.”
There was also a chance to purchase some of Brilliant Inc’s simulated diamond jewellery. Its diamonds are ethically grown in state-of-the-art laboratories under precise conditions. They grow layer on layer like actual diamonds and all the jewellery is cut by hand by master jeweller craftsmen. And just perfect for fashion focused diamond lover who are also budget savvy.
These diamonds do not need to be mined, which can be environmentally controversial because of the scars it leads on the land. There is also a stigma surrounding how the workers are paid and treated.
Cogan added: “After the film Blood Diamond people are thinking more about where diamonds are coming from. People now want to buy something more ethical, a product that has a nice concept to it. You would not be able to tell the difference between our simulated diamonds and natural diamonds.”
