As the name suggests, Bulldog is a skincare range tailored to the needs of men. Despite the rough and tough name, however, the actual products are very gentle, with only natural ingredients making up their range of body washes, shaving creams and lotions.

But how did the idea behind Bulldog come together? And why choose nature’s, shall we say, ‘unconventionally beautiful’ dog breed to front a skincare brand? Simon Duffy let us in on the secrets of his success.

How he started

“While I was in New York I became good friends with Rhodri Ferrier” says Duffy “The idea for Bulldog came over a few beers down the pub with Rhodri. We were talking about the terrible brands that men had to choose between for their skincare products – they are all me-too versions of what are traditionally female brands.”

Simon Duffy co-founded Bulldog with Rhodri Ferrier in 2006. The London-based company started off small, with big dreams for the future. As the underdogs of the industry (geddit?), Bulldog started with Sainsbury’s as their sole supplier in 2007.  This triggered other big distributors to notice this was a company that wasn’t just all bark and no bite- they could compete with the big hitters in men’s cosmetics while staying all-natural.

Originally Simon trained as an accountant- but that didn’t appeal to him. He then moved to New Zealand to work at an advertising agency which moved to New York for three years following that. Simon says that starting the business young had both its pros and cons: “Age has been a double edged sword; it has helped me out in some ways – there is a huge amount of help and advice for young entrepreneurs. Having said that, doors were shut in my face – especially when I was trying to get a factory to work with me.”

Where he is now

If Bulldog were to be entered into Crufts, it would certainly win. Simon Duffy has helped bring the brand into the mainstream, offering men an affordable and natural body and skincare range. Part of the brand’s success seems to lie in the fact that the products needn’t be bought in a specialist shop or online (us guys like our products, but we’re all about the ease of purchase.) Bulldog has now brought the brand to Boots, Planet Organic and Superdrug, to name but a few of the many stockists.

We asked Simon why he chose to make the company all natural. He said: “The Bulldog range was born out of frustration that there were no options available for switched-on men who wanted to reduce the number of man-made chemicals in their bathrooms. We are passionate about the ingredients we use in our products and want men to care as much about what they put on their skin as the food they eat.”

An aversion to cheesy male cosmetics marketing seems to be where the answer lies. Simon said: “Currently the category’s [men's cosmetics] advertising and marketing to men can feel quite generic; black and white images of male models with rippling six packs are irritating and not aspirational.  The Bulldog is certainly not the prettiest creature.  He’s fat, lazy, wrinkly and more likely to be found asleep on the sofa than out chasing sticks – a lot like us if we’re honest.  However, he’s also protective, loyal, tenacious and honest.  A real British icon.”

Caroline Lucas has had a highly successful political career, not just as the leader of the Green Party, but also as a champion for charities and organisations promoting ethical campaigns. Politics has never been the most glamorous of professions, but Caroline has stood out in the political style stakes, showing politicians that green living can easily fit in to the lives of young professional families. George Walker speaks to Caroline Lucas about her hopes for a more ethical fashion industry, her natural beauty secrets and how she strives to live an ethical and stylish life.

George Walker: How important is fashion in your line of work? What ethical labels do you love?

Caroline Lucas: Fashion isn’t really important in politics, although people will always focus on your appearance when you’re in the public eye. So I guess I like to look stylish, but am in no way a label-junkie! I like independent shops and brands which achieve high ethical standards and keep prices reasonable for the shopper. The Gossypium boutique in The Lanes [Brighton], for example, is a striving independent enterprise employing local people and promoting strong green credentials at affordable prices. It even sells make-it-yourself kits using fair trade materials. The Brighton based Ecochicollection online shop is great for ethically made jewellery across all budgets. I also like People Tree, which manages to be both extremely stylish and very ethical. Vintage shops are good places to find chic secondhand clothes, and importantly, high street stores like M&S and Topshop have now started to sell increasing numbers of Fairtrade cotton pieces.

GW: Is there anyone that you think is a true stylish ethical icon?

CL: The late Brighton-born Anita Roddick was a true pioneer of ethical business practices at a time when it was unfashionable to talk about ‘being green’ – indeed, there’s now a blue plaque where her first shop was opened in Brighton. Safia Minney of People Tree is also a real icon; she has great personal style and has worked hard to establish a successful business based on a genuinely fair deal for workers and the environment.

GW: As for beauty products, how important are natural or organic ingredients to you? Any beauty ranges you can’t live without?

CL: I try to buy natural or organic products whenever I can, and always seek guarantees that none of the products I use are tested on animals. Certified organic skin care and hair care products are more available now than ever, and they’re better for your health and for the environment. I love the handmade cosmetics at Lush, a brand which has really succeeded in making being green fun and affordable. The Body Shop – especially its famous body butter, which uses cocoa butter made from cocoa beans from a fair trade co-operative in Ghana – is also a favourite, as is the all-natural Burts Bees range at Boots. Neal’s Yard Remedies and Dr Hauschka products are lovely for a special treat.

GW: How do you keep your home both eco-friendly and stylish?

CL: My home is a real sanctuary to escape to and put my feet up after a long and hectic day. So I like it to look warm, welcoming and lived-in, with lots of earthy colours and natural fabrics. I use eco-friendly cleaning products to try to reduce the amount of harmful chemicals in the house, as increasing amounts of research is pointing to serious health problems being caused by the many toxic chemicals that surround us. Needless to say, I also recycle whatever I can, buy recycled goods such as stationery for my office, and am always on the look out for more energy efficient appliances.

GW: What do you think can be done to make people realise that ethical living can be practical, stylish and rewarding?

CL: For a start, we need to have much better access to information about how and where our clothes are made – so that we can make more informed choices when we buy. Personally, I am always conscious of where my money is going when I pay for a product, and I want to know that I am investing in goods that are ecologically sound and providing a good deal for the people who made them. I think most consumers would be bothered by the knowledge that their money might pay for others to be exploited – or for the degradation of our natural world. Campaigns highlighting the poor labour practices and environmentally damaging methods employed by companies are crucial for raising public awareness of this individual responsibility to use consumer power for the good. In general, we need to see more affordable ranges of Fairtrade and organic products on the market, and a greater promotion of ethical services – such as ethical banking and investment.

GW: How do you raise your children to think about the environment and ethical issues?

CL: I would be a very boring mum if I spent all my time lecturing my sons on environmental and ethical issues, but I do make sure that they understand the real value of things – and think carefully about how their choices affect others.

GW: What are your main hopes for the future of  fashion and design industries here in the UK?

CL: The really important thing is to bring high ethical standards much more into the mainstream, so that all brands become more ethical and affordable. Trade unions are doing some brilliant work in trying to make this happen. War on Want’s campaign against use of sweatshop labour in the production of cheap clothes for the UK high street is also doing a good job of making consumers more aware of the issues – and therefore more likely to demand better standards. It would be great to see more organic and Fairtrade materials being used as the norm – and I think the UK design industries have real potential to lead the way in creating innovative and sustainable products which reflect the need to make the transition to a greener future.

GW: Brighton is obviously a really fun city – what is it about Brighton that you love most?

CL: Brighton is a truly unique place which has, quite rightly, become famous for its rich and diverse culture. There are lots of things I love about the town – the beautiful seafront, the historic architecture and open green spaces, the Duke of York cinema, the many independent shops and cafes – but I think most of all, it’s the people who make Brighton what it is. People here have an open minded, progressive and dynamic approach to life, and there is a real spirit of independence that makes Brighton especially fun. It’s a hotbed of vibrant grass roots politics and community activism which really benefits from a bustling student population. And thanks to the strong values of its people, Brighton has become a place in which independent businesses can thrive; I believe it has massive potential to be a hub for innovative green business in the future.

Artivist Film Festival has been running for six years now and has showcased over 400 films representing 45 countries through festivals in LA, Tokyo, Lisbon, Mexico City and the UK’s own capital. I think everyone has been startled at how Harry Potter star Emma Watson has grown up to become a style icon and champion of ethical fashion. Apart from the hugely popular Burberry campaign, Watson is also the current face of ethical clothing label People Tree. As we revealed late last year, Watson has helped design a sporty and stylish new range for the company, targeted at eco-conscious teenagers.

The collection was released this February with not a wizard hat, cape or spell book in sight.

Jo Wood

Former model and rock chick Jo Wood spent 30 years touring with the Rolling Stones, leading a heady lifestyle alongside ex-husband Ronnie Wood.  Now she’s one of the biggest names in organic beauty, with a healthy organic lifestyle to match.

Jo decided to go organic in the late 1980’s after becoming ill. She began her organic skincare range by making homemade creations for her family and friends. In 2005, Jo Wood Organics was founded, now celebrities are queuing up to try her natural creations. Kate Moss has said “I love Jo’s products, they smell beautiful!” and Jerry Hall has gushed “Jo Wood Organics are my favourite, I adore them.”

Katharine Hamnett

Katherine Hamnett has brought activism to the catwalk and red carpet in a refreshingly forthright manner. Her slogan t-shirts highlight ethical campaigns close to the designer’s heart, from fair trade fashion to freeing Burma from its military dictatorship.

The likes of Lily Cole, Peaches Geldof and Bloc Party have all been spotted wearing Hamnett’s t-shirts in recent years, proving that Hamnett’s Eighties look is having a bit of a fashion revival.

Hamnett said: “There’s an increasing trend for consumer driven ethical and environmental purchasing. People are realising that how we consume decides the future of the planet and they’re doing something about it.”

Donna Air

Donna Air, former MTV presenter and star of Byker Grove, has worked with the Organic Milk Cooperative to promote the organic way of life.

Donna always uses local organic produce to feed her family. She said: “I’ve always cared about what is in the food I eat but this becomes even more important when you have a baby and only want what’s best for them.”

The Organic Milk Suppliers Cooperative is made up of around 500 British organic dairy farmers using traditional methods to produce organic milk that is good for you, the cows and the countryside.

Erin O’Connor

The ultra-stylish model Erin O’Connor is a British icon who has used her status in the fashion industry to promote ethical fashion production.

O’Connor has recently shown her support for Fashion for Relief, an organisation which will be auctioning off celebrity garments to raise funds for the Haiti appeal. She’s also a leading spokesperson for ethical fashion charity, TRAID. To mark TRAID’s 10th anniversary for 2010, Erin O’Connor visited a fair trade textile factory in India; you can see pictures of her trip at the Richard Young Gallery in London until 10th February.

The lovely Livia Firth has become a big name among the fashion elite over the years. Celebrated for her commitment to ethical fashion, Livia has her own eco-fashion blog on the Vogue website and spends her time trying to turn the red carpet green!

As we publicized on Greenmystyle.com last year, Livia was part of the 12 Degrees of Fashion group which set up a pop-up shop concept to create a buzz around ethical fashion. She’s also Creative Director at Eco Age, working alongside her husband, actor Colin Firth.

Livia shows the fashion world how ethical style can be experimental, chic and on-trend.
