Hollywood stars donate red carpet dresses for Topshop scheme

November 27, 2009 by Maria Kaski · Leave a Comment

Topshop gives shoppers access to A-lister’s dresses
Topshop are launching a hiring out initiative of A-lister’s gowns, giving us mere mortals a chance to give these gorgeous frocks a new lease of life. From 26th November until 6th December at Topshop’s flagship Oxford Circus store, you will be able to nab yourself dresses paraded on the red carpet by the likes of Scarlett Johansson, Dita Von Teese and Peaches Geldof. Mandy Barder writes.
Other stars that have donated their gladrags include Freida Pinto with a white mini dress from Burberry Prorsum, Kate Moss with a maroon Lanvin slip dress, Nicola Roberts with a custom made tour dress with hundreds of swishing silver tassels and Julia Restoin Roitfeld with an eye-popping floor length Roberto Cavalli dress. Designers from Marios Schwab and Zandra Rhodes to Brit sensation Christopher Kane have also muscled in on the action.
Unfortunately, such beautiful treats do come at a price, but luckily for us it’s not bank breaking. A mere £40, which goes straight to charities Age Concern and Help the Aged, you can hire a dress for the night. If you simply cannot part with your dreamy garment, there is a chance to bid for it after Christmas when an auction will be held showcasing the entire collection.
Opening times for Topshop’s “Dress Me Up” are from 1-9pm Monday to Friday and 1-8pm on Saturdays and 1-5pm on Sundays.

Vivienne Westwood and Chanel at Gladrags & Handbags event

November 4, 2009 by Maria Kaski · Leave a Comment

A host of designers from Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen to Chanel and Stella McCartney have donated coveted items from their collections for the ‘Gladrags & Handbags’ sale organised this month in aid of the Kids Company charity. Eleni Sardi writes.
Following the success of last year’s ‘Rumble in the Jumble’ sale, hosted by Gwyneth Paltrow, this year’s event is set to be even bigger with some of the fashion world’s biggest names offering to donate pieces. Shoppers will be able to sift through items from Christian Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, Armani, Hugo Boss, Donna Karan, Chloe, Tom Ford and Luella, to name but a few.
‘Gladrags & Handbags is set to be a three day fashion sale featuring womenswear, menswear and accessories from leading designers at affordable prices.
Proceeds will go into funding a magical Christmas Day party for over 2,000 children in need.
Kids Company provides practical, emotional and educational support to vulnerable inner-city children and young people. The charity’s founder and director, Camila Batmanghelidjh, says: ‘We are overwhelmed by the generosity of the fashion community and hope that shoppers will flock in droves to bag a bargain at the sale. By buying once you give twice and each purchase will help restore joy and dignity to a child.’
As Camila adds, the Christmas Day party funded by the proceeds includes, ‘transport to and from the event, lunch, games and entertainment, as well as presents for every child. We also produce food hampers to ensure no-one goes hungry over the Christmas period and employ duty workers to be on 24 hour call so that no child feels completely alone.’
The event will be hosted in the Music Rooms in Central London and the admission is £2.00 on the door.
Opening times:
Friday 13 November 9am-7pm
Saturday 14 November 10am-5pm
Sunday 15 November 11am-4pm
