Daily eBay – A chic festival pick

May 21, 2009 by greenmystyle

CapeDaily eBay guest editor Farah, of Usualshop.co.uk, is preparing for another round of festivals in the fine British summer. Farah writes: Whilst the Scandinavians say that there’s no such thing as bad weather, just unsuitable clothing, there are limits – and getting cold and damp at a festival is invariably a miserable experience.

If you’re heading to a festival soon I say take proper waterproofs (including trousers) whatever the forecast and however unfashionable they may look. Can’t abide the plastic look? Most of the time a strong wool or tweed will do the trick: light enough to carry around and not too warm and sweaty, yet thick enough to see you through the evening, withstand the odd shower and to act as an extra blanket if the tent’s chilly.

After years working behind the scenes at festivals in all weathers, I’ve come to the conclusion that a cape, rather than a conventional coat with sleeves, is the perfectly-evolved garment. It can be thrown on over whatever odd combination of jumpers, jackets or other layers you may have had to accumulate, with the arms kept free and less risk of ending up resembling the Michelin Man. A full-width circular cape which fastens securely at the front is a better bet than a wraparound shawl-style poncho.

I’m liking this 1960s checked cape, which has a belt-type arrangement to give it some degree of shape, and is a good length: too long, especially in black, and it all gets a bit Dungeons and Dragons. Navy blue vintage nurses’ capes – there’s usually a couple on eBay at any given time – are also pretty cute. Mix with a floaty dress or skirt, thermal leggings, chunky socks and wellies, and hope that you won’t need to go the full distance and get out the GoreTex.

Bidding on this ends at 08.44 on the 26th May, and starts from £10.99 with £8 postage.
