Daily eBay – kitsch enamelled water pitcher
June 10, 2009 by greenmystyle
Found by guest editor Farah, of www.usualshop.co.uk, who writes: Enamelled and hand-painted tin tableware in the canal-boat style can be rather twee – beware holiday souvenirs from the Norfolk Broads – but this one is just the right side of kitsch, I reckon, and could qualify as naïve folk-art if we wanted to put a label on it.
With its small flowers painted on a black background, this 14-inch water pitcher makes for a nice alternative to the usual white or cream enamel jugs, and an edgier look than the proverbial shabby chic (a phrase I’ve always had a bit of an issue with, as it’s usually applied to stuff that’s in no way shabby by true vintage-lovers’ standards). It’s also got a bit of an Eastern European or possibly Scandinavian feel to it – I could see it next to one of those Swedish Dala wooden horses.
Tall tin jugs and pitchers like this make lovely vases, especially for wild flowers, and the more chips to their enamel, the more dents and little rust-spots the better. You can buy them brand new, of course, and even – heaven forbid – artfully distressed for a ‘vintage look’ but really, they’ve got to be genuinely battered.
This 14-inch jug is currently at its £4.99 starting price, and bidding ends at 2.11pm on June 15. The canal boat style revival starts here… next stop, horse brasses?
