Daily eBay – Robin Day 675 chairs
November 14, 2008 by Sarah Woodhead
Thank heaven for friends that are experts in 20th Century design and love Robin Day chairs! As I’m emerging from a post-RE:Fashion Awards fuzzy brain, my pal Tom Burgess of Collinge Antiques is busy choosing today’s Daily eBay.
Tom has probably the coolest job, after mine of course. He’s one of those lucky chaps that gets to rifle through the best stuff from house clearances, junk shops and flea markets, to spot what can be lovingly restored, and he gets paid for it!
Tom’s picked these Robin Day 675 chairs for Daily eBay today. Safe to say these aren’t cheap, but they are, according to Tom, worth the money you’ll invest. If you’re not in the zone for splashing out on iconic and collectable pieces right now, just take a look for fun. These chairs are a little bit of design history, after all.
Tom writes: “Robin Day is in my opinion the best British post-war designer. He’s still alive actually, though he’s getting on a bit. Without being too…uhm…bleak, Robin Day’s work will probably rise in price once he dies. Not nice to think, but, well, there you go.
“Day was designing these chairs at the same time as he was working on the Festival of Britain. I picked them not just because they’re Robin Day chairs, but because I like the look of them too. I love the bent plywood backrest.
“The price is what’s known in the trade as ‘full market price’, which means it’s expensive, but worth the money. I’d say you should make the seller, Mark Parrish, an offer.
“In fact, I’ll let you into a secret. I sold Mark these chairs last year, for not quite that amount. He’s since spent time and money reconditioning them. They’ve probably been repolished as well as re-upholstered.
“The really nice thing about these is that they’re original and not, say, Habitat reproductions.”
Current price is £650, or make an offer.
