Daily eBay – Sixties Modernist Cees Braakman ‘Japanese Series’ bedroom suite

March 24, 2009 by Sarah Woodhead

I’ve got that buzzy feeling again, the one that runs through me when I find a contender for most favourite Daily eBay discovery ever. Look folksters, it’s a Sixties modernist bedroom suite, with two of these wall-mounted bedside table beauties by Dutch designer Cees Braakman and a complementary Pastoe table. I love the pictures even, never mind the things themselves, and the current bid price is only £1.40!

Words from the seller: “A rare to find 1960s modernist bedroom suite composed of TWO wall mounted bedside cabinets AND ONE small dressing table/cupboard (this auction is for THREE pieces of furniture). One of the bedside cabinets converts into a dressing table by flipping the top around revealing a mirror on its reverse side and a small shelf inside. The other cabinet has a single drawer and a thick white glass shelf above it. (The cabinets both mount onto wooden wall brackets which are all present and easy to fit).

“I am also including  a small Pastoe dressing table with two small drawers white formica top; One of the drawers has small plastic compartments inside as seen.

“This furniture was designed by Dutch designer Cees Braakman as a part of his most popular series of furniture named the ‘Japanese Series’ designed in 1959.

“Each piece was manufactured by the UMS Pastoe company (makers labels to both bedside cabinets as shown).

“In recent years Cees Braakman furniture has become hard to find and reaches high prices at international design auctions. The sideboards from this series are well known and loved but this is the first time I have ever seen bedside cabinets from this series.”

Bidding ends April 1 at 9.15pm. It’s definitely no April Fool’s joke.
