Eco decorating from an interiors expert

Bamboo

Bamboo is one of the world’s most renewable sources, which makes it a great alternative hard wood flooring and also means you can rest assured having stylish flooring doesn’t have to harm the environment. It’s hard wearing, making it the perfect flooring choice for high traffic areas, such as hallways and is available in a wide choice of finishes. We like the Artisan range from Urbane Living, which is available in two colour ways; Shanghai and Lombok (as shown) prices start at £27.50 per sq m.

Cork

Forget scary 70s cork flooring and embrace the next generation of one of the most sustainable materials used for flooring around. Cork is stripped from the cork oak tree without having to fell the trees or cause any damage. It also has excellent thermal properties, meaning you can save on energy bills and like some woods, won’t rot in bathrooms or kitchens. Wicanders stocks a wide range of cork flooring in an array of colours and finishes which also uses click technology (similar to how you install laminate flooring) which means there’s no need for nasty glues. Prices start from £35 per sq m.

Sisal

If you want the look of carpet while being eco friendly at the same time then look no further than sisal. Sisal comes from a plant traditionally found in dry climates such as Mexico and is an extremely renewable source. What’s more it’s grown with minimal use of pesticides meaning it’s environmentally friendly, from the field to your floor. Kersaint Cobb has an extensive collection in a wide range of colours. Price start from £29.99 per sq m.
