Fresh talent showcased: Fashion’s sustainable graduates

February 2, 2010 by Jen Marsden

mafashion300Fashion’s fresh new talents are emerging from the London College of Fashion and their work is more sustainable than ever. Yesterday saw the first ever graduate showcase of MA Fashion & the Environment from the London College of Fashion in the Southbank Centre. Eleni Sardi writes.

Twelve graduates exhibited their work which spun across all aspects of fashion, from design and production to marketing and distribution.

The presentation of the graduates’ work offered an opportunity to discuss the several ecological, social and cultural dilemmas of fashion in our time as each one of the projects followed a different concept of sustainability in original and exciting ways.

Every project was unique but here are a few that caught Greenmystyle.com’s attention:

Emma Rigby’s work took into consideration the underestimated energy demands of fashion, when it comes to the simple act of everyday laundry. Her project and energywaterfashion.org explore how, ‘Design can be used to influence the way garments are worn and used’ responding to concerns about ‘unsustainable consumption of energy and water’. Tara Baoth Mooney’s work ‘Lifecycles’ was one of the most interesting concepts with an emphasis on items, such as shawls, that have been passed through the generations, suggesting ‘memory as a symbol of human presence and as a propagator of connection through fibres’. Tara Baoth Mooney
