Green Stars on the Big Screen

October 20, 2009 by Jen Marsden

ageofstupid300Can cinema ever be truly green? That was the question that a panel of film professionals and environmental commentators attempted to answer last night at an event as part of the 53rd London Film Festival, currently taking place in the capital until the 29th of October. Eleni Sardi writes.

A great range of movies with environmental messages – from Happy Feet and Wall-E for kids to big blockbusters such as The Day After Tomorrow and educational documentaries such as An Inconvenient Truth, The Age of Stupid and Vanishing of the Bees – were mentioned by the panellists.

The panel included Andy Whittaker from Dogwoof Distribution, co-founder of the company and pioneer in ethical film distribution, Nicola Giuggioli, co-founder of the independent platform for filmmakers and audiences Brightwide.com and The Guardian’s environmental commentator Leo Hickman, with Observer’s Lucy Siegle as moderator. The panel agreed that while films were great, they need to speak less about the problems and more about ‘The Good Life’ of being green.
