And films don’t need to be just about the content – as the panel discussion proved. The filmmaking process – from production to distribution – could also have its moment in the limelight. Solar powered events, such as Franny Armstrong’s ‘The Age of Stupid’ premiere in Leicester Square where Vivienne Westwood came riding her bike to companies to Green Shoot, a company seeking alternatives such as recycling props, there are many opportunities for the film industry.
Hickman mentioned a UCLA study that found Hollywood was an equal producer of greenhouse gases to the aerospace industry in the state of California!
As Whittaker put it ‘small things can make a difference’.
So, can cinema ever be truly green? With advancements in digital technology, the panel thought so. Giuggioli spoke about the importance of movies that not only entertain but ‘provide an instrument for people to act’.
