Head-onistic with Nanny K

March 19, 2009 by Maria Kaski

There has been a gaping hole in the sustainable party bonnet market for far too long, but the recent announcement of Nanny K’s launch of fun and flirty headpieces at one of our favourite eco-boutiques Enamore.co.uk is giving us a spring in our step and feathers on our heads this season. Maria Kaski investigates.

Icons can crop up in the most unlikely of places. Take Julia Roberts for instance and her role in Pretty Woman. Although her day, or night job, left much to be desired, her transformation into ‘posh’ hat wearing lady was truly inspirational and made her somewhat of a life-guru for many a developing teenager the world over.

And although there are admittedly few alternatives for ethical hats, Nanny K’s vintage inspired collections are picture perfect for the ensuing Summer days. What’s more, they may be enough to get us back to a Pretty Woman hat loving mood again.

The new range includes an array of hair clips, alice bands and combs made from a gorgeous selection of vintage laces, flowers, buttons and feathers which are perfect for weddings and polo parties in the scorching summer sun.

The featured cocktail hat is called ‘Sew Summer’ and is constructed on a sinamey base with comb, two vintage silk roses, vintage feathers and quill, finished with a vintage velvet flower. This cute hat would look perfect with a ruffled chiffon dress and platform heels for an elegant summer party look. Remember to keep the colours simple and let the hat do the talking instead, these headpieces can be busy with their masses of contrasting fabrics, so an equally ‘adventurous’ outfit could lead you straight into fashion overkill.

However, for all their saccharine romantic excess, these hats are expertly constructed and are guaranteed to make you feel all Pretty Woman on a day trip to Royal Ascot. You couldn’t ask for anything more…except maybe Richard Gere.
