Hot eco talent collaborate for Brighton’s AOH festival

April 14, 2009 by Clare Saxon

This month sees the collaboration of kimono shoe designer Hetty Rose and upholsterer extraordinaire Sarah Penelope, displaying their work together at Brighton’s Artists Open Houses in May; an unmissable event which promises a sneaky peek inside talented young artists’ front rooms.

The Artists Open Houses festival in Brighton runs alongside the Brighton Festival, and is host to realms of painting, printmaking, furniture, jewellery, textiles and sculpture which you can see exhibited inside the artists’ and designers’ very homes. In fact there is over 1000 artists in over 200 venues, so it’s fair to say you’ll be spoiled for choice if you make the trip to the South coast.

The part of the festival we’re getting all excited about though, is the collaboration between Hetty Rose and Sarah Penelope. Hetty creates bespoke shoes ehich speak of modern ease with a voluptuous Eastern twist, as the sexy heels are made from vintage Japanese kimono silks. But while you may have swooned over Hetty’s designs before, you may not be so familiar with Sarah Penelope’s work.

Sarah upholsters vintage furniture or recycled pieces made from curious materials such as men’s suits and French hemp, and the finished pieces are a dream. You’ll find no shoddy workmanship in this Brighton-based designer’s furniture. She uses traditional techniques that suit the period designs and are meticulously finished to give a beautiful focal point for the home that will last more than a lifetime due to their classic structure. Because she uses such traditional processes to create the furniture you can be sure you are getting your money’s worth as the pieces really will be trasured forever.

The collaboration will run for the first four weekends in May along with the rest of the festival and is definitely one to stick in your green diaries if you’re thinking of revamping your home, updating your shoe collection, or like us, getting a possibly messy insight to an artist’s work space.
