Introducing…50 beautiful eco celeb heart throbs
February 1, 2010 by Jen Marsden
Here at Greenmystyle.com we’ve had a gruelling few days spent looking at the gorgeous glitterati of the eco-celeb world (tough eh?!) George Walker talks through our top eco heartthrobs hitting the green carpet.
Ever dreamt of taking a ride in George Clooney’s electric car? Ever wanted to spend some time with Daryl Hannah at a tree protest? But apart from the surface appeal of many celebrities, we’ve also been entranced by their green credentials.
So many celebrities are promoting ethical living nowadays that it seems the biggest red carpet trend of this year won’t be a certain dress, shoe or tux’: it will be going green.
In a world of cosmetic surgery, millionaires and that conveyer belt of fame- the red carpet- celebrities haven’t always been the most eco-conscious bunch. “In the future, everyone will be famous for fifteen minutes” said Andy Warhol. And isn’t it strange how the quote can apply to the recent obsession for fast, cheap fashion at whatever ethical cost?
The whopping million-dollar advertising contracts offered to A-listers have often come before concerns over the workshops that produce such companies’ products.
Recently, however, there’s been a change in the tides. Celebrities are alert to the way their status can influence others to help change things for the better. They might well end up with just 15 minutes of fame, but the celebs on our list are going to use every minute to do some good. From concerts for Haiti to photo shoots for PETA, from penning songs about the environment to founding their own charities; these celebs have sure been busy.
Now we know eco-celebs aren’t anything all that new. The likes of Bono, Sting and the much missed Anita Roddick were ethical pioneers, showing the A-list how to make a difference to something more than the singles chart or the box office. And yet there was always a feeling that ‘going green’ was uncool or- at worst- an insincere project to garner more fame.
The new red carpet set, however, is proving how ethical living and political responsiveness is an important (and attractive!) characteristic for any person, celebrity or not. Leonardo DiCaprio has his own website dedicated to his extensive environmental work; Colin Firth and his lovely wife Livia are giving us all a master class in stylish ethical living and Cameron Diaz is getting training from Al Gore to teach his course on climate change. Celebrities are bringing money in to important industries for the future, from chic ethical fashion labels to eco technology companies.
The sceptics among you may well still scoff at the idea of a set of altruistic, philanthropic celebrities, but the celebs on our list are doing more than just sending a check and doing an interview. Besides, self-promotion or not, raising awareness for such important issues can only be a good thing, right?
We’ll soon be allowing you lovely readers to vote for your favourite green celebrity. So, which eco heartthrob gets your pulse racing and your ethical side all aroused? Check out the lists below and get ready to vote!
