Love style? You’ll love Estethica at London Fashion Week

February 18, 2009 by greenmystyle

Is this you? You love fashion, get seduced by glossy catwalk pictures and pore over Vogue, only now you want to indulge in your passion for high style in a more eco-friendly way. If it is, may we introduce you to a hotbed of eco fashion talent, London Fashion Week’s Estethica. Greenmystyle.com’s London Fashion Week coverage is sponsored by eco fashion boutique DeviDoll.com.

Estethica, if you haven’t heard of it already, is the zone at London Fashion Week devoted to style-led ethical labels. Now in its sixth season, the 38 designers and brands exhibiting this week are creating beautiful clothes you’d actually love to wear, while meeting strict ethical criteria set down by the curators. In short, this is high fashion without cruelty.

It’s the brainchild of From Somewhere designers Orsola de Castro and Filippo Ricci, along with Anna Orsini from the British Fashion Council. Recognising just how vital it is that the fashion industry embraces sustainable and ethical production, resources and processes, they created the Estethica showcase as a platform for emerging eco designers. Orsola chatted with Greenmystyle.com editor Sarah Woodhead this week about the event and her top talent tips.

Sponsored by Monsoon, Estethica means that ethical talent such as Ivana Basilotta (pictured above), Mark Liu, Ciel, Eloise Grey, Christopher Raeburn and Mia are rubbing shoulders with the likes of Vivienne Westwood Red Label, Ann-Sofie Back, Julien MacDonald, Todd Lynn, Luella and Paul Smith, London Fashion Week catwalk designers you’ll already know.

London Fashion Week is essentially about press and buyers spotting the trends and the brands they want to support – this week’s event will be showcasing Autumn Winter 09/10 collections. The great news for you, as an ethically-minded fashionista, is that these buyers and the mainstream press are now being exposed to great new ethical labels. This eventually means more ethical designers in stores and more choice for you.

In London Fashion Week’s 25th year, Estethica is an opening show on the first day, somewhat of a coup and a hot ticket. Greenmystyle.com’s invitation is twinkling away on the mantelpiece, and you can be sure that we’ll report back on the highlights, from our favourite ranges to the key pieces. We’ll also be profiling our pick of the designers, and interviewing Mark Liu and Christopher Raeburn. Watch this space.

Just love Orsola’s ‘From Somewhere’ label, think the idea of recycling luxury fashion pre-consumer waste is fantastic!

I also definitely agree with Orsola when she says ethical fashion is now increasingly mainstream, not only has the showcase grown from 15 to 37 designers but part of the esethica showcase this year saw the govt launch its Sustainable Clothing Action Plan which involved the likes of M&S, Sainsbury and Oxfam. Now with govt support, it will be a fantastic couple of years ahead for ethical fashion!
