Once upon a time, mineral make-up was found only in niche corners of the beauty world but the big cosmetic houses have spotted the trend and have launched their own versions. In a four-part series, we bring you the mineral collections from the high street brand names you will instantly recognise.

Mineral make-up is less artificial and made with far fewer ingredients. A pure mineral foundation can contain only five elements compared to a shocking 30 in conventional formulations. Fillers like talc, phthalates (to make textures slide) and artificial fragrances and preservatives are all common ingredients in standard make-ups, which can aggravate sensitive skins and clog pores. If you’re prone to rosacea or sensitivity, you would benefit from the skin-friendly mineral ingredients.

While the big beauty houses have created mineral products, many are still far from natural as they still contain fragrance, preservatives and fillers with some percentage of minerals. We’ve highlighted the labels who have gone the extra mile with more natural formulations (like Marks and Spencer, Korres and Boots), but it’s still refreshing to see alternatives finally available for all.
