Star bargain of the day – Huge discount on a huge trend with Howies
January 7, 2009 by Clare Saxon
The 1990s had more to offer than the decline of shell suits and the rise of brit-pop and baggy chic. The original grunge icon of the decade that is making a comeback isn’t Kurt Cobain. No, it is his checked flannel shirt. We’ve bagged the bargain eco version.
Everyone from Kate Moss and Alexa Chung to Mary-Kate Olsen and Kirsten Dunst have been snapped in grungey checked flannel shirts. The more it looks like you stole it from your boyfriend as you rolled out of bed this morning, the better.
Howies have the green winner though. This more feminine version not only looks dapper teamed with skinny or flared jeans and hot with a mini and knee lengths, but it is made from organic cotton, and fresh from the ethical darlings Howies. The vibrant young company haven’t exactly made a drama of their sale though, and in fact the ’sale’ link is quite shy. But this shirt is £26 down from £53.83 and I think that is well worth shouting about.
The assured quality of Howies means this shirt is definitely a wardrobe asset, because you’ll be wearing it forever.
We also love these grungey checked shirts as they represent investment fashion, because even if you bought one years ago, you can get it out and wear it for years to come. This is because the updated style hasn’t changed. In fact, the more original and retro looking, the better. For a lot of people, these gorgeous items will give them the chance to re-wear once un-loved clothing. They are practical warmth and the catwalk fashion in one laid back package.
