Starbucks boosts Fairtrade and sponsors our London Fashion Week coverage
September 11, 2009 by Maria Kaski
In the run-up to London Fashion Week, ethical fashion editors with a jam-packed schedule and a penchant for dark fluids will be indulging their Starbucks espresso addictions in the knowledge that the number one purchaser of Fairtrade coffee in the world is using only 100% Fairtrade Certified coffee for all its espresso-based beverages. Our London Fashion Week editor, Maria Kaski, writes.
With Starbucks serving nearly two million coffees across the UK and Ireland each week, its new initiative not only means that we’ll be a more Fairtrade nation, but also a more alert one to boot.
This commitment to Fairtrade means that every Starbucks customer who buys an espresso-based drink will be helping to generate more than £350,000 in the coming year to help improve the lives of more than 100,000 farming families.
Harriet Lamb, Executive Director of the Fairtrade Foundation UK, says: “Starbucks is really setting the pace for the coffee industry by using its global size for good. This move will expand the reach of Fairtrade and deepen its impact on tens of thousands of farmers who are at the very heart of the Fairtrade system. Farmers need Fairtrade now more than ever, and even though these are difficult economic times, people across the country are staying loyal to their ethical values and to Fairtrade. From today they can enjoy Fairtrade values over their favourite Starbucks coffee.”
It is because of these very impressive Fairtrade credentials that we are more than a little thrilled about the prospect of Starbucks being Greenmystyle’s sole sponsor during the very busy London Fashion Week ahead. That espresso is going to come in very handy as we dash from show to show!
To celebrate, Starbucks is giving away Starbucks Cards loaded with £25 each to 10 very lucky Greenmystyle readers. These can be redeemed from any Starbucks across UK & Ireland. Watch this space for more news on how to enter to win.
With a Fairtrade offer like this, coffee has never tasted so sweet.
