Ascension’s London flagship store to open in November

September 16, 2009 by Maria Kaski · Leave a Comment

This November will see online eco fashion store, Ascension, put down roots in London’s west end. Amiee Jones writes.
The store will be the first of its kind in our bustling capital; a sanctuary of solely ethical fashion and home ware from a host of both new and established designers. No longer will eco-fashion fans have to make do with a painfully small selection of organic cotton T-shirts in the corner of luxury fashion stores, but will be able to browse an entire shop full of guilt-free brands to their hearts desire.
A smattering of luxury designers and knowledgeable staff on hand will ensure a trip to Ascension is nothing short of indulgent. The sweeping 1800 sq ft store will be home to designs by Edun, Annie Greenabelle, and Black by Noir as well as Ascension’s own labels. The generous size of the store means that men are also catered for.
Up and coming brand, Beautiful Soul’s kimono inspired debut line will also be stocked, amongst essential basics such as denim, and sumptuous organic cotton sheets. This blend of the exclusive-meets-the-everyday means the store is literally a one-stop-shop for all your eco needs, soon to be on every eco-fashionistas hit list.
So come November give your computer mouse a rest and head down to the West End for some retail therapy where you won’t be inwardly groaning at the never ending ‘made in China’ labels.

London Fashion Week – Seven days to go and counting

September 11, 2009 by Maria Kaski · Leave a Comment

With just seven days to go until the doors open at London Fashion Week, here is a sneaky peak at what the event has in store for us this year, and a must-have guide to what hot designers we will be checking out this year.
This year’s LFW promises to be bigger and better than ever, and as Green My Style’s LFW editor, I feel it is my utmost duty to get you as excited as I am about the host of new designers scheduled to launch at LFW.
From September 18th to 23rd, central London will be a buzzing hubbub of designers, editors and models eager to catch a glimpse of the latest hot talents.
These talents are in abundance at Esthetica. While established brands such as Junky Styling and From Somewhere make a recognisable return to the eco-stands, I am most looking forward to catching up with this year’s Vauxhall Talent Scout winner Ada Zanditon, checking out the kimono inspired collection at Beautiful Soul, taking a peek at EFF Innovation winner Henrietta Ludgate’s new range and mingling  with shoe designer extraordinaire, Nina Dolcetti.
With so much to see it’s more than lucky that Starbucks is sponsoring Green My Style’s LFW coverage. I know i’ll be needing that coffee!
See you at London Fashion Week!

Beautiful Soul launches a kimono inspired debut collection

September 10, 2009 by Maria Kaski · Leave a Comment

beautiful-soul

Beautiful Soul combine luxurious silk kimono fabrics, structural silhouettes and origami detailing to stunning effect in its debut collection entitled ‘smallprint.’ Amiee Jones writes.
The autumn/winter collection is spun from vintage, silk kimonos dating back to the forties, as well as satin and jersey produced from sustainable bamboo. The combination of original japanese fabric with the highly constructive shapes they are cleverly draped into, echo the conceptual aesthetic of designers,  Rei Kawakubo at Comme des Garcons  and Yoshi Yamamto. However, the richly coloured silks succeed in giving an sense of desirability to unconventional, asymmetrical shapes, and therefore render the designs highly original.
This new eco label has managed to amalgamate a rarely achieved couture look with a fresh and bespoke angle. Beautiful Soul’s founder, London College of Fashion graduate, Nicola Woods,  places emphasis on a feeling of exclusivity, saying, “Although the silhouettes featured within ‘smallprint’ can be reproduced, the fabric contained in each kimono is limited and this allows exclusivity to the wearer.”
The line is ethically and environmentally aware, working to a strict ‘zero waste’ policy that sources recycled materials in a responsible way. The label also provides training and working opportunities to less privileged communities, the current collection being produced by a registered women’s project in London.
Already garnering praise for its work, Beautiful Soul won the Ethical Fashion Forum’s Innovation award in february this year and was a finalist at the Fashioning the Future Summit last November. The next collection will be shown at London Fashion Week’s Estethica show later this month. And, after a debut like this to whet the palette, we can’t wait to see what’s next.
