Honoured Natural Beauties by Neal’s Yard Remedies
Green A-listers from Donna Air and Livia Giuggioli to Joanna Yarrow and Lisa Oxenham have been awarded with Neal’s Yard Remedies prestigious Natural Beauty Honours.  Eleni Sardi writes.
Already in its second year, the Natural Beauty Honours, pioneered by Neil’s Yard Remedies, aim to recognise the contributions of individuals in the public eye who are bringing environmental issues the fore.
Donna Air, spokeswoman for the Soil Association, editor-in-chief for the Soil Association’s Grown in Britain Cookbook and a supporter of the Real Food Festival, says, “I truly believe what we eat and put on our skin should be as organic and natural as possible, and this is a wonderful way to celebrate it.”
Livia Giuggioli, wife of Colin Firth, producer and co-founder of Eco Age and Joanna Yarrow, writer, broadcaster, co-founder of sustainability company Beyond Green, and the green expert on GMTV and Five News were also among the winners.
Lisa Oxenham, beauty director of Marie Claire, and Sarah Stacey, editor of You Magazine and founder and editor of the critically acclaimed  Green Beauty Bible, were also the proud recipients of the Natural Beauty Honours.
Peter Kindersley, owner of Neal’s Yard Remedies says, “the Natural Beauty Honours are our way of officially recognising important people who have made a substantial contribution to green issues and who share a vision with Neal’s Yard Remedies to raise the profile of a natural and organic way of living.”

Fifi Bijoux introduces silver for SS10

October 2, 2009 by Maria Kaski · Leave a Comment

Romantic silver shimmer is the focus of British sustainable jeweller Fifi Bijoux’s SS10 collection. Mandy Barder writes.
Launched at LFW, the luxury ethical jewellery brand’s sixth collection is a dainty and elegant range, where silver is the dominant colour. Vivien Johnston, director and designer, claims, “summer romance, light hearted, slightly cheeky, Mama Mia-ish style” as the inspiration behind the range.
Crisp and delicate heart and star fish designs grace Fifi Bijoux’s first silver collection and the carefully sculpted ‘Mile High’ and ‘Kiss Me Quick’ pendants dangling on 22” chains are set to be ideal for casual summer necklines or charming accessories at weddings. The ‘Belle’ earrings make for a pretty and playful choice for alfresco summer dining.
Fifi Bijoux uses ethically mined silver from the same affiliate as their gold pieces, where making a positive impact and avoiding worker exploitation or environmental disruption is a key priority. The cutting and mining of stones is done in a socially responsible and environmentally friendly way and all packaging is manufactured sustainably.
Celebrity devotees include Colin Firth and his wife Livia and BBC News at Six presenter George Alagiah, who owns a lovely pair of gold cuff links.
Fifi Bijoux collections are made in London by master goldsmiths and further details can be found on their wind powered website www.fifibijoux.com.

Celebrities attend the Reclaim Exhibition at London’s Eco Age

September 25, 2009 by Jen Marsden · 1 Comment

Last night saw the launch of Reclaim at Eco Age, an exhibition promoting the greener side of design and just one part of the many activities held in association with the London Design Festival. Jen Marsden writes.
Eco Age, the West London shop established by siblings Livia Firth and Nicola Giuggioli, opened its doors to a host of celebrities and eco-lovers, including Livia’s star actor hubbie Colin Firth.
Enough of Colin though – this small exhibition was the leading evening spectacle. Nicola Giuggioli explained where the idea came from. “We wanted to put together all the elements of what Eco Age focuses on, such as fashion, textiles, design and homewares. So, we sent Orsola De Castro, (curator of LFW’s Estethica and revolutionary fashion label  HYPERLINK “http://www.fromsomewhere.co.uk” From Somewhere) and an incredibly good interior and furniture designer called John Teal to Heathrow to the lost luggage auction to buy 20 pieces.” Not knowing what was inside each suitcase, their challenge was to produce an item from whatever mixed textiles they came across.
Both designers reached different conclusions on what to create. Teal produced a fabulous bedspread made out of the entire contents of one bought bag that got the big thumbs up from the Greenmystyle.com team. It had been carefully stitched together to give the effect that you’ve got clothes strewn across your bed. And, on the off chance that you haven’t quite sorted out your washing since your summer holiday, no visitor will ever know with this ingenious concept.
De Castro created a selection of quirky yet gorgeous wedding dresses, using elements of her classic From Somewhere signature expression. One piece has a chopped up and re-stitched ‘I heart NY’ tee as the focal point of the dress’s rear, with variations of white that included floral and striped fabrics eclectically mingled. This was to represent the new explosion of life that the garment has been given, while not forgetting the “elements of people’s lives from all over the world, all their history, and stories.” Another elegant black dress has rosette details that has been created from discovered panties (washed and clean, we were thankfully told).
Giugggioli is already taking the Reclaim idea to the next level: ‘I wonder about what would happen if the actual owner of one of those suitcases showed up at the shop and recognised his or her belongings in the new creations… I hope I will have the chance to see the reaction!’
The Reclaim exhibition is taking place until 27th September 2009, so head to  HYPERLINK “http://www.eco-age.com” Eco Age at 213 Chiswick High Road, London, W4 2DW to have a gander.
