Top ten: Fairtrade and sustainably sexy smalls
February 10, 2009 by Clare Saxon
You can look chic from head to toe and know for sure your outfit has no carbon footprint, but it can a bit trickier to track where your undies have come from. Follow our guide to Fairtrade and sustainable undies and you’ll be glamorously green inside and out.
Giving your wardrobe a green over-haul can be quite a daunting task, so it’s easiest to start with the small things. Your smalls in fact. They might look innocent, but one pair of knickers in the UK creates 19kg of carbon dioxide in its lifetime, which is produced from shipping, air freight and cotton farming. And on top of the fact many Indian workers are only paid half a penny per pair and the average amount of water used in a textile mill in India is around 3 million litres a day. That’s 10 millions cans of coke in case you were wondering. This video produced by Eco Boudoir called More Than Pretty Knickers aims to change the textiles industry for better with its stunning and shocking visuals.
However shocking this video is, you still might be tempted to buy high street lingerie, because the eco underwear tag doesn’t sound very sexy.
But that’s why we’re here. Take a look at our tantalising top ten list of fabulous Fairtrade and sustainable smalls that look super sexy and are as easy on the eye as they are are on the wallet.
1. The underwear set pictured above is called Magnolia by Luva Huva. The knickers are £20 and the bra is £27, which means you can afford to buy the adorable Primrose version too.
Joanna Ketterer is the founder and designer of Luva Huva, and she prides herself on creating hand made, ecologically friendly garments. Joanna says, ‘I use a variety of end of line fabrics, remnants and cut-offs that would otherwise go to waste. All the materials are sourced locally and every garment is handmade in the UK by myself, meaning my knickers have a small carbon footprint. Consequently they are not only beautiful but also ethically sound.’ Just perfect for decorating your birthday suit with green glamour.
Puresha are also currently selling a Luvva Luvva gift box which includes Fairtrade chocolates,Tsi-La natural perfume, organic pomegranate lip balm and Luva Huva french knickers for a nifty fifty pounds. We wholeheartedly approve.
